Hi, I'm Michelle Phelan - a food lover and Nutrition & Health Coach.
I grew up the daughter of a chef. My dad was my kitchen hero - he used to sit me on the counter of our restaurant in Carne Beach, Ireland, and feed me samples of what he was preparing for that day's menu.
Each day after school I'd wander into the back of the kitchen like it was my secret passage into my dad's world. I'd watch everyone prepping for that evening's service and get to taste all the sauces my dad was preparing. Then before I left I was always given a little treat from the pastry chef, usually brown bread ice cream - my favourite and an Irish specialty. My dad and I were thick as thieves. On days off we'd stroll around town with our dog, look at menus and see what other people were cooking up. Every birthday was spent in the restaurant, and my dad would serve me and my friends a feast with special treats and desserts especially for us.
I always had a deep love of food, but since I was always happily fed by my father, it never occurred to me to actually learn how to cook. Yet recently, when I moved in with my boyfriend, I decided to throw myself into it and blog my way through my new cooking adventures. I wanted to create healthy but tasty food. Also, from a very young age, I was inspired by the concept of your body being your temple - treat it with respect, and it will look after you. Thus, I became interested in nutrition and eventually studied Nutritional Therapy at the Irish Institute for Nutrition & Health (IINH). I learned how to treat many of my own health problems with food instead of medication - particularly acne, skin problems, allergies, and digestive issues. I also noticed a huge difference in my mood and energy levels.
My other great love in life is music: I've been working as a singer/songwriter and in the music Industry since I left school. After three years at IINH, I left college to hit the road with my band and move to Paris where I pursued my musical dream. I toured France, Ireland and England, got to perform on national radio and TV and play amazing gigs.
However, the love of food was still there, and after the split of my band, I returned to IINH to complete my Adv. Diploma in Nutrition & Health Coaching. Now armed with a new kitchen and new life in Amsterdam I intend to strike the balance between my two loves of food and music again. I am starting a new musical project, I'm offering nutrition & health coaching services in Amsterdam through FOOD IS LOVE, and I'm in the kitchen learning and cooking every day and sharing with you my love for good food that tastes great and nourishes your body too.
